In Civilization IV I always felt Marathon speed was a bit too quick, TBH probably a fair bit too quick for my liking. I hoped that Civ V's Marathon speed would be longer. However IMO Firaxis went way overboard with how long Marathon turned out to be. Basically Civ V research accelerates the passage of time such that most units are obsolete before they see much real use, this eliminates that situation. It actually improves balance for civs like Rome that have only early game UU's to establish themselves well enough not to fall irrelevant later on.
